Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) Sydney NSW

Breast Mastopexy surgery, also known as a breast lift, is a surgical procedure aimed at raising and reshaping the breasts. The surgery involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue.

During the procedure, the patient is typically placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions on the breasts, which can vary depending on the individual’s specific needs.

Breast Mastopexy surgery, often simply referred to as a breast lift, may be able change the shape and position of the breasts without the need to reduce the size of the breasts. The procedure may also help patients experiencing breast ptosis.

Reasons to consider a Mastopexy (breast lift)

Patients come to Dr Peter Laniewski seeking Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) for a wide variety of reasons.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: During pregnancy, breasts may increase in size to prepare for breastfeeding, which may cause breast ptosis. This may impact the elasticity of the skin.

Dramatic weight loss: Following weight loss, some patients may find that their breasts have lost volume or that they are experiencing breast ptosis.

Genetics: Some patients may be more prone to experiencing breast ptosis and this is sometimes due to a lack of muscle tone.

Degrees of breast ptosis

During your consultation with Dr Laniewski, he will examine your breasts to determine the degree of your breast ptosis. The degrees of breast ptosis include:

Grade 1 (Mild Ptosis): Grade 1 ptosis can be characterised by breasts that have descended below the inframammary fold, with a nipple that appears at the same level as the fold.

Grade 2 (Mild to Moderate Ptosis): Grade 2 ptosis can be characterised by breasts and nipples that have both sagged below the inframammary fold.

Grade 3 (Severe Ptosis): The most severe form of ptosis, grade 3 ptosis, can be characterised by breasts and nipples that sag significantly below the inframammary fold, with the nipples pointing downwards.

Benefits of a breast Mastopex (Breast Lift)

Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) surgery may have benefits to patients for various reasons.

  • Lift the breasts and nipples to a higher, more central location on the chest wall.
  • Reduce excess, inelastic skin and tighten the remainder.

Combining your breast lift with Prostheses (Implants)

While a Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) can assist with breast ptosis, the procedure is not designed to address concerns regarding breast size. If patients wish to increase the size of their breasts, they may consider a combined Augmentation Mammoplasty (Breast Augmentation) and Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift).

Augmentation Mammoplasty (Breast Augmentation) and Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) procedures may be performed together to help achieve patient’s individual goals. After Dr Laniewski has lifted and reshaped your breasts, he will create a pocket to insert implants into the breasts. Please keep in mind that this is a much more complicated surgery than an augmentation or mastopexy alone, which may increase costs and recovery times. In some cases, an augmentation mastopexy may need to be carried out during two separate procedures. Patients should advice Dr Laniewski if they are considering both procedures during their consultation.

The mastopexy procedure

The Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) procedure will comprise of the following steps:

Step 1: Administering anaesthesia

Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) surgery is always performed under general anaesthesia. Dr Laniewski works with qualified and registered anaesthetists during the procedure.

Step 2: Making the incisions

There are a number of potential incision options for this procedure. This will depend on the patient’s breast size and shape, size and position of your areolas, the quality of skin and the degree of breast ptosis. Considering these factors, Dr Laniewski may make an incision:

  • Around the areola
  • Around the areola and then vertically down from the areola to the breast crease
  • Around the areola and then vertically down to the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease

Step 3: Reshaping the breasts

Through your incisions, Dr Laniewski will:

  • Lift and reshape the underlying breast tissue.
  • Reposition the nipple and areola.
  • Remove excess breast skin
  • If needed, reduce enlarged areolas by excising excess skin.

Step 4: Closing the incisions

To complete the surgery, Dr Laniewski will close your incisions with layered sutures in the breast tissue.

Step 5: Post-op recovery and results

Some patients may find that they are able to return home on the same day as their mastopexy procedure, however some may require an overnight stay in hospital. Once given the clearance from Dr Laniewski, patients will be able to go home and begin the recovery process.

What to expect after the surgery

After your mastopexy, Dr Laniewski will close your incisions with small stitches. This may assist in reducing the appearance of scarring. Patients will need to have someone drive them home after surgery, and some patients find that it can be helpful to have someone help at home for the first two or so days.

Every patient reacts to surgery differently and heals at their own pace. There are some potential commonalities that breast lift patients experience. It is normal to experience some swelling of the breast. Swelling is the body’s normal reaction to surgery. Some discolouration and bruising are also likely. However, most patients find that such swelling, discolouration and bruising will subside on their own after a few weeks.

Post-operative LED Light Therapy may be recommended to help decrease downtime and assist in healing after surgery, The treatment can be combined with post-operative visits. LED Light Therapy may be able to assist in reducing the swelling and bruising that can occur after surgery.

Most patients will be able to see the final results of breast lift after around three months once the swelling has subsided.

How Much Does A Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) Cost?

There are several elements that can factor into the total cost of Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) surgery. Dr Laniewski does not provide a one-price-solution for patients considering a breast lift. This is because there are a range of costs to consider beyond just the fees paid to your surgeon. Patients will be able to better understand their mastopexy surgery cost in their consultation with Dr Laniewski.

Breast Mastopexy can be broken down into three cost components: surgeon’s fees, anaesthetist’s fees and hospital fees.

Surgeon’s fees

Your surgeon’s fee is the fee that Dr Laniewski charges for performing the surgery. This fee is fixed and comprises of the cost of the entire breast lift surgery, pre-operative care and post-operative care and visits.

Anaesthetist’s fees

Mastopexy surgery with Dr Laniewski is always performed under general anaesthesia. Your anaesthetist fee will be determined by anaesthetist who attends to you.

Hospital fees

Hospital fees can vary from hospital to hospital. Given that breast lift is usually performed as a day case, your hospital fees will likely comprise of the time required to complete the procedure, as well as the time needed to recover from the anaesthetic.

You may also need to pay out of pocket for support and compression garments that will help to assist recovery after surgery. Patients may also need to factor in the cost of missing up to two weeks of work, transportation costs and potentially the costs of a carer to help you after your surgery.

Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) surgery will usually not be covered by Medicare or private health insurance. During your initial consultation with Dr Laniewski, you will be given a detailed breakdown of all of the costs involved.

Mastopexy (Breast Lift) FAQs

Am I a candidate for breast lift surgery?

Patients may consider Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) surgery for various reasons including breast ptosis. Breasts should be fully developed before considering the procedure.

Patients considering Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift) should be in good overall health. Patients should maintain a healthy lifestyle and have a steady weight maintained for a minimum of six months prior to surgery. Patients should also keep a healthy weight after your surgery.

If you are a smoker, you will need to stop smoking several weeks prior to and after the surgery. Smoking can constrict your blood vessels, which can take a toll on your body’s ability to heal correctly after major surgery.

Breast lift surgery is not the right choice if you’re looking to reduce or increase the size of your breasts. A breast reduction or a breast augmentation, which will insert implants into the breasts, could be combined with the lift.

How do I prepare for Mastopexy (Breast Lift) surgery?

Before your mastopexy procedure, Dr Laniewski will provide you with a comprehensive list of pre-operative instructions. This will include things like quitting smoking, adjusting medications and preparing a comfortable recovery space. He will also provide instructions regarding what to do the day before your procedure, such as fasting, showering and what to wear to the hospital. Patients should follow the instructions carefully.

How visible will scars be after my mastopexy procedure?

Dr Laniewski will attempt to keep scarring to a minimum. Keep in mind that breast lift is a surgical procedure, which means that scars are inevitable. However, with proper care, scarring may fade over time and can take on a softer appearance.

Does a Mastopexy( Breast Lift) hurt?

During your breast lift surgery, most patients will not feel anything due to the general anaesthetic administered before the procedure. When you wake up after surgery, you may feel some discomfort and tightness across your chest. Your surgeon will offer pain relievers as needed.

How long does the procedure take?

Mastopexy(Breast lift) surgery usually takes between two to three hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the case. Once you are out of surgery, you may need to stay in hospital for an additional few hours so that we can monitor your condition before sending you home.

When will i see my Mastopexy (Breast Lift) Results?

Most patients are able to see results immediately after breast lift surgery, patients may notice that their breasts have lifted in appearance. Despite that, it may take up to a few months for your final results to appear as swelling subsides and the breast shape and position continues to settle. As for your surgical scars, these can take several months and up to two years to fade.

Can I still breastfeed after having a Mastopexy (Breast Lift)?

Most women are still able to breastfeed following a breast lift. During your surgery, Dr Laniewski will use measures preserve the nipples and the milk ducts so that breastfeeding can remain a possibility. If you are considering any kind of breast surgery after having children, note that you will need to finish breastfeeding before considering the procedure. To give the breasts a chance to stop producing milk and return to their normal size, we usually suggest waiting at least three to six months after you stop breastfeeding.

However, even if you have chosen not to breastfeed, we still recommend waiting at least three months after childbirth before considering a breast lift. This will give your body time to recover from pregnancy and settle from any initial milk production.
