The loss of youthful facial contours can result in debilitating shyness, poor body image, and lack of self-esteem. The ripple effect of these negative indicators can damage relationships, inhibit social assimilation and even lead to discrimination in the workplace. We all age, albeit at different rates due to factors that include heredity, stress, environmental conditions and lifestyle choices. Although some people disparage facelifts as vain or artificial, the results actually more accurately reflect the appearance of a person who has lived a healthy and fulfilling life.
A facelift can provide dramatic results and the procedures involved bear little resemblance to those used in the past. Reluctance toward undergoing a facelift due to fear of acquiring a frozen, plastic appearance is unwarranted when modern, progressive techniques are used. A natural-looking result is the expected outcome of a facelift in the 21st Century.
A facelift will improve and remove visible signs of aging. Areas in the face and neck treated include:
- sagging skin around the middle of the face
- fatty volume restored to provide healthy facial contours
- deep creases around the eyelids, mouth and nose
- unwanted jowls in the lower face
- loose, sagging skin or fatty deposits under the chin
A facelift is suitable for any healthy individual who doesn’t have underlying medical conditions that could impede healing. A positive outlook and realistic expectations are also essential.
The initial consultation with Dr Laniewski will get you both on the same page in evaluating the areas of your face and neck you want improved. Facial features and skin characteristics will be evaluated, including wrinkles, texture, folds and elasticity. Your hairline will indicate the discreet placement of any incisions, and the overall bone and soft tissue structure of your face will determine the best surgical plan.
HOW IS A FACELIFT PERFORMED
A facelift often combines the repositioning of deep tissue along with the removal of unwanted skin and fat. This multi-layered rejuvenation approach can provide outstanding results that appear to reverse the signs of aging.
There are a lot of variations to facelift procedures depending on individual requirements and underlying conditions. Most commonly, a facelift involves the surgeon creating an incision that is hidden in the hairline and around the natural contour of the ears. In cases of a neck lift to remove ‘turkey neck’ for example, a small incision will be hidden on the underside of the chin.
Skin is freed from underlying tissues before being pulled up and back. Unwanted skin is then removed and the skin stitched back together. The incisions are well concealed and surgically precise, resulting in an undamaged facial appearance. Generally, the stitches are placed under the skin and will dissolve organically.
The surgery takes several hours and depending on the work performed you may need to spend the night in hospital before returning home the next day
RECOVERING AFTER A FACELIFT
Any bandages or dressings used during surgery are usually removed one or two days later. In some cases a fluid drainage tube is used and this will also be removed within a couple of days
Dr Laniewski can prescribe pain relief medication if required, as you will experience some bruising or swelling of the face. A cold compress can be a valuable aid in minimising discomfort. You may also need to keep your head elevated or still for a few days. Smokers are requested to quit for several weeks both before and after surgery, as smoking can cause infection, delay healing or harm sensitive facial tissue.
There is a slight risk of nerve damage, but feeling should fully return over time. After surgery your face can feel numb or stiff, and it’s important to anticipate a different (but improved) look. Laser hair removal is an ideal treatment for unwanted hair positioning caused by the rearrangement of your skin.
In no time at all your mirror will once again become a friend, and your revitalised and natural-looking face is sure to improve self-esteem and overall appeal for many years to come.
