Gynaecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Sydney NSW

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is a medical procedure performed to treat a condition called gynecomastia, which is the enlargement of the breast tissue in males. Gynaecomastia surgery involves the removal of excess glandular tissue, fat, and/or skin from the breasts.

There is no complete consensus of opinion regarding the causes of gynecomastia, although certain drugs, medical conditions and fluctuations in weight are suspected influences.

Candidates for Gynecomastia surgery?

The surgery is an option for men of any age and may be even more appropriate for those who have lost weight. Patients who may be regarded as obese, who drink excessively and smoke, or those who use anabolic steroids she consider modifying their lifestyle choices before considering gynaecomastia surgery. Men with firm, elastic skin may not require breast reduction surgery at all once their physique has returned to a healthier condition.

If male breast issues are still prominent, even after losing weight, gynaecomastia surgery may be the right choice.

The Gynaecomastia surgery procedure

The goal of the operation is to reduce breast size and enhance the chest contour. An incision will be made either under the arm or at the junction of the skin and areola (ring of colour around the nipple) to remove excess glandular tissue. Gynaecomastia surgery can also be performed in conjunction with liposuction if this suits the patient’s individual needs.

In cases where the excess tissue is mostly fat, and the skin is in good condition, liposuction may be all that is required. Excess fat can be removed through small incisions. For patients with greater amounts of glandular tissue a more complex surgical excision of the tissue may be required.

The surgery itself will take between 1 to 3 hours on an outpatient basis. General anaesthesia is administered by a certified staff member, and you will be able to recover from the operation in your home.

Male Breast Reduction: After Surgery Care

Wounds are dressed and a support garment worn for several weeks to help minimise swelling and assist in healing the chest. Recovery speeds for gynaecomastia surgery vary depending on general health and the surgery plan, but most men feel comfortable enough to return to work within one week.

Initial swelling and bruising should subside shortly after surgery but localised numbness can last for several months. In some few cases, healing can be impeded by fluid accumulation or infection that will be treated by a doctor.

All Surgery Carries Risks.

Individual results may vary.
