A Brachioplasty , also known as an Arm lift, is a surgical procedure to address and remove excess fat and loose skin from the upper arms. Fatty tissue on the upper arms can increase as we get older, genetic predisposition and fat storage can be a factor and loose skin is often more noticeable after dramatic weight loss. Supporting fat may lose its structure over time.
A Brachioplasty may be appropriate for men and women of various ages. A brachioplasty (arm lift) procedure will be discussed at length during your initial consultation with Dr Laniewski.
The consultation
Dr Laniewski will review appropriate aspects of your medical history and assist you in establishing your surgery goals. He will inform you of the surgical procedure involved, along with expected outcomes, and will address any concerns you might have about the operation. Part of your preparation for the operation also involves a program for rest and recovery once you return home from surgery.
The brachioplasty (arm lift) procedure
The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. If there is an abundance of fatty tissue in the upper arms, liposuction will be performed to remove excess fat. The remaining arm lift procedure is performed by making an incision on the inside of the arm, removing excess skin, and then stitching the incision together. The scar will not be visible in most situations with your arm hanging normally by your side. The amount of skin requiring removal will determine the length of the scar. If skin is removed from only the upper arm, the scar will be hidden almost entirely in your armpit, however, for more saggy arms the scar can run almost to the elbow.
Underlying supporting arm tissue will be tightened and changed during the procedure, and the internal sutures are dissolving. A brachioplasty (arm lift ) takes around two hours to complete, and you will be able to return home and rest on the same day. Brachioplasty ( Arm Lift) surgery can also be coupled with other cosmetic procedures such as breast contouring.
Expected outcomes include:
- A changed contour of your arms
- Reduction of loose skin and fat
- Permanent results
- Improved comfort
Arm lift recovery
Compression sleeves will be provided to reduce swelling and aid recovery after surger Although the arm lift targets the upper arms, swelling can occur all the way to your hands. During the initial recovery phase you should keep your arms elevated to alleviate the swelling. Any bruising caused by the surgery should diminish during the first week of recovery.
After a couple of days, you should be able to fully raise your arms, although soreness will persist for a few days more. You must avoid driving until your arms feel comfortable and fully functional. This can take several weeks after your surgery. During this time you will have multiple post operative consultations with Dr Laniewski to assess your surgical wounds and healing.
Long-term results
You will be advised of appropriate wound care post operatively. Long term surgical results will benefit from a program that ensures you maintain a steady weight. A little exercise, healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle contribute to your recovery.
