Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Sydney NSW

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a light-based approach that involves the use of a special solution that reacts when exposed to a specific light source. The process focuses on targeted areas of skin where changes have occurred, such as those affected by sun exposure or certain skin conditions.

During treatment, the solution is applied to the skin and then activated by light, which interacts with oxygen in the skin to target specific cells. PDT can be used on small or larger areas, depending on the location and extent of the skin concern being managed.

This treatment may be considered for areas such as the face, arms, and hands, where sun-related skin changes are often more visible. Suitability and treatment details are discussed during consultation.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Procedure

Before treatment begins, the skin is carefully cleansed to prepare the area. In some cases, an exfoliation step, such as a light peel or cleansing scrub, may be performed to help the solution absorb more effectively.

Once the solution is applied, it remains on the skin for a set period — usually between 30 minutes and 3 hours — to allow absorption. After this time, a specific light source is directed at the area for about 20 minutes to activate the solution.

Some patients may experience a warm or tingling sensation during this stage. Cooling methods, such as gentle airflow, may be used to help ease any discomfort.

Concerns That May Be Addressed

Photodynamic therapy may be considered for certain diagnosed skin conditions that relate to sun exposure or changes in skin cells. This approach is sometimes used in clinical settings for conditions such as:

  • Actinic keratosis: These are areas of skin that may develop after long-term sun exposure. They can appear as small, rough, or flaky patches that may vary in colour and texture.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma in situ (Bowen’s disease): This condition affects the surface layer of the skin and is most often seen on areas exposed to the sun, such as the face and hands. It may appear as red or scaly patches with uneven edges.
  • Superficial basal cell carcinoma: This condition may occur on areas that receive frequent sun exposure. It can appear as a flat or slightly raised area that may not heal fully over time.

Dr Laniewski will assess your skin and determine whether photodynamic therapy is an appropriate option for your individual needs.

After-Treatment Care

The skin may remain sensitive for several days after photodynamic therapy. Discomfort may reduce gradually as the skin recovers. Protecting the treated area from sunlight is very important during this time. You should use broad-spectrum sunscreen and wear protective clothing such as a hat or scarf when outdoors.

Depending on the preparation or cleansing method used, some light peeling or flaking may occur for a few days. Those with more sensitive skin may find that the treated area takes a little longer to settle.

The level of reaction can vary depending on individual factors, such as the skin’s condition and the extent of the treated area. Experiencing redness or discomfort can be part of the normal healing process as the skin recovers.
