Augmentation Mammaplasty Surgery Steps
Dr Laniewski only performs breast augmentation in accredited hospital facilities. Your boob job will comprise of the following steps:
Step 1: Administering anesthesia
Augmentation mammaplasty (breast augmentation) is always performed under general anesthesia. Dr Laniewski works alongside qualified and certified anesthetists during the procedure.
Step 2: Making the incisions
Dr Laniewski will make an incision either in the inframammary fold or in the armpit. This will be discussed prior to surgery, during your preoperative consultations.
Step 3: Inserting & positioning your breast implants
Once your incision is made, Dr Laniewski will form a pocket, either under or over the pectoral muscle. Through this pocket, he will insert your breast prostheses(implants) and position them as discussed in your consultation.
Step 4: Closing the incisions
To complete the surgery, Dr Laniewski will close your incisions with layered sutures in the breast tissue. These incision lines will flatten and fade in time. Scars reach full maturity at 12 months.
Step 5: Post-op recovery and results
Augmentation Mammaplasty may be performed as day surgery. Patients can return home on the same day as their augmentation mammaplasty (breast augmentation) however some may require or decide that an overnight stay in hospital is necessary. Dr Laniewski, will determine when the patient can return home and begin the recovery process.
What to expect after the surgery
Your incisions will be closed with small sutures that will dissolve over the next few weeks. Dressings should be left intact until your post-operative visit with Dr Laniewski at 7 days post-surgery. You will need to have someone drive you home after your surgery, and it could be helpful to have someone help you at home for the first two or so days.
Augmentation mammaplasty patients may have some pain aching and tightness for the first few weeks after surgery. Breasts may feel tight for several postoperative days. There may also be swelling around the operation site. There may be some minor bruises. Paracetamol, ice packs and the use of LED therapy may be of assistance in recovery.
Breast Implant Types
The breast implants available for your augmentation mammaplasty (breast augmentation) surgery include saline-filled or cohesive silicone-gel filled. Silicone implants are Dr Laniewski’s preferred choice of breast implants.
Saline-filled
Saline implants have a silicone outer shell filled with a medical-grade saline solution. During the enlargement, the breast implant is filled through a valve.
Cohesive silicone gel-filled
Cohesive silicone gel-filled breast implants are the preferred choice in implants. The thicker consistency of the silicone may reduce the risks of postoperative leakage problems
Breast Implant Size
Breast implant sizes are measured in CC’s – a metric unit of volume with one CC of silicone weighing approximately one gram. Breast implants are available in a wide range of sizes, from 125cc up to 700cc. Larger customised sizes may be available for some patients.
It is important to understand that implant size does not necessarily correlate with bra cup size. Each prostheses size will look different on each individual, weight and frame, the volume of natural breast tissue, and the shape and size of ribcage all affect final outcomes of surgery.
Breast Implant Shape
During your consultation with Dr Laniewski, you will discuss your breast prostheses size options. Your breasts and chest wall will be measured to find the most appropriate size for your body shape and your desired outcome.
Breast implants are generally offered in two forms: round or teardrop (anatomical) shaped.
Round breast implants
Round implants offer a defined round shape but can assume more of a teardrop form when the patient is upright. They may provide upper half breast fullness than anatomical implants.
Anatomical (teardrop) implants
Anatomical implants are tear drop shaped and can appear fuller at the base. An anatomical breast implant requires exact positioning to prevent shifting and flipping after surgery. If they shift after augmentation mammaplasty surgery, the shape may be distorted.
Anatomical breast implants may be more suitable for some patients.
Breast Implant Surface
In addition to choosing the fill of your implants, you will also need to decide on a surface. Implants come in both smooth and textured surfaces.
Smooth implants
Smooth implants, as the name suggests, have a smooth outer shell and may feel softer to touch. Smooth implants may have an increased tendency to move out of position – down and out towards the side of the chest – and therefore are at an increased risk of capsular contracture. This may require additional surgery.
Textured implants
Textured implants have a rough outer shell. Textured implants may be associated with a lower risk of capsular contracture and implant rotation. All anatomical implants are textured in surface.
Augmentation Mammaplasty – Incision Sites
Our preferred incision methods for breast enlargement are inframammary and transaxillary.
Inframammary incision
This is the most common implant incision used by Dr Laniewski. The inframammary incision is placed in the natural crease under the breast and allows the breast implant to be placed in a precise pocket formation. This also offers more control over excessive bleeding during the procedure.
Transaxillary incision
The transaxillary incision is made in the natural crease of the armpit, wherein a channel is created down to the breast. The scar is less visible in the armpit fold and may decrease the risk of keloid scarring.

Am I a Candidate for Augmentation Mammaplasty (Breast Augmentation) Surgery?
You may be a candidate for a breast augmentation if:
- You are physically and mentally healthy.
- You have realistic expectations regarding what surgery can achieve.

This may include cessation of smoking, adjusting medications and preparing a comfortable recovery space. Dr Laniewski will also provide instructions regarding what to do the day before your procedure, such as fasting, showering and what to wear to the hospital. You should follow these instructions carefully to ensure your safety during the procedure.
How Visible will Scars be after my Augmentation Mammaplasty (Breast Augmentation)?
All surgeries will have accompanying scars. You will be given scar care advice prior to your procedure. Individual results vary. Surgical incisions will be placed appropriately. There are scar treatments that you can consider after your procedure to help minimise the appearance of the scars that you do have.
How do I know which Breast Implants are right for me?
Dr Laniewski will work closely with you to determine which breast implants will best suit you. During your consultation, you will be able to try on a surgical bra fitted with different types of implants, this will assist you to determine the most appropriate implant for you.
How much does the breast augmentation procedure hurt?
Individual experiences vary. After surgery, you may feel some discomfort and tightness across your chest. Dr Laniewski and your anesthetist will offer appropriate pain relievers as needed. Paracetamol, icing and LED therapy assist in recovery.
How long does the procedure take?
Breast augmentation surgery usually takes one to two hours to complete, depending on the complexity of the case. Once you are out of surgery, you may need to stay in the hospital for a couple of hours to monitor your condition.
When will I see my breast augmentation results?
You will notice that your breasts have increased in size immediately after your mammaplasty augmentation (breast augmentation) surgery. It may take a few weeks for your final results to appear as swelling subsides and the skin stretches fully. Surgical scars can take several months and up to two years to fade.
Will my breasts look natural after Augmentation Mammaplasty (Breast Augmentation)
Individual results and expectations vary. It is important to have a thorough discussion with Dr Laniewski during your preoperative consultations.
Teardrop-shaped implants may produce more natural-looking results. Placing these implants under the pectoral muscle or using the dual plane placement technique can also help create a natural look. Dr Laniewski will work with you to create your individual breast augmentation results.
Can I still breastfeed after getting breast implants?
Dr Laniewski will preserve the nipples and the milk ducts so that breastfeeding can remain a possibility for you. Be sure to mention during your consultation your hopes to breastfeed one day in the future.
Another thing to keep in mind is that while breast implants may not impact your ability to breastfeed, future pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter your augmentation results. For this reason, we usually recommend waiting until you have finished having children before considering breast enlargement surgery.
I’ve just had a baby - when can I have Augmentation Mammoplasty (Breast Augmentation) surgery?
If you are considering breast augmentation surgery after having children, note that you will need to finish breastfeeding before considering the procedure. To give the breasts a chance to stop producing milk and return to their normal size, we usually suggest waiting at least three to six months after you stop breastfeeding.
However, even if you have chosen not to breastfeed, we still recommend waiting at least three months after childbirth before considering surgery. This will give your body time to recover from pregnancy and settle from any initial milk production.
Do I need to have Anaesthesia?
Dr Laniewski always performs breast augmentation surgery under general anesthesia. This means that, during the procedure, you will be fully asleep, with no sensation of discomfort during surgery and no recollection of what happened during surgery when you wake up. Dr Laniewski regards general anesthesia as the safest option when performing augmentation mammaplasty (breast augmentation) surgery.
When will I be able to return to my exercise regime?
As you heal from breast augmentation surgery, you will need to avoid any strenuous physical activities. A general guideline of when you can resume exercise may look like this:
Immediately after surgery: We encourage you to begin some light walking to improve circulation and prevent blood clots.
Two weeks after surgery: You may start some light jogging, walking on a treadmill or walking uphill.
Four to six weeks after surgery: You can resume most exercise, with the exception of heavy lifting and contact sports.
Six to 12 weeks: You can resume weight training and contact sports, pending Dr Laniewski’s clearance.
When will I be able to return to work after Augmentation Mammaplasty Breast enhancement surgery?
Following your breast augmentation surgery, expect to take at least a week off from work. Most patients are able to return to desk work within seven days, however occupations that require strenuous movement and lifting may require anywhere from two to six weeks off.
Am I too old for Augmentation Mammaplasty (Breast Augmentation) surgery?
There is no right or wrong age to undergo augmentation mammaplasty breast enlargement surgery. While most of Dr Laniewski’s breast surgery patients are in their 20s and 30s, many women choose to undergo this procedure in their 40s and 50s and some even later in life. If you are unsure in regard to your age discuss this in a consultation with Dr Laniewski before deciding.
How long will my breast prostheses (implants) last
There are so many factors that can impact the length of time that your implants last. Gene Your implants can last for a decade or longer. The type of implant you have, along with your lifestyle and other factors, can have an impact on how long they last. The vast majority of patients find that they benefit from replacing their implants every ten years.
Will I need to wear a bra after Augmentation Mammaplasty Breast Augmentation surgery?
Yes. Following your breast enlargement surgery, you will be given a surgical bra to support your breasts while you heal. Depending on Dr Laniewski’s instructions, you may need to wear this bra for up to six weeks. Additionally, you should avoid wearing any bra with an underwire for at least six weeks after surgery.
What are the risks involved with Breast Augmentation surgery?
No surgery is without risk. Individual results may vary. Some of the potential risks associated with breast augmentation surgery may include:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Fluid accumulation
- Poor scarring
- Hematoma
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation
- Possibility of needing revision surgery
- Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
- Implant rotation
- Implant rupture
- Capsular contracture
- Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)

Do breast implants increase the risk of breast cancer and BIA-ALCL?
There is no evidence that breast implants increase the risk of breast cancer. However, your implants may interfere with the detection of breast cancer via mammography. As such, you should inform your doctor that you have breast implants before any breast scan.
However, textured breast implants have been associated with a rare form of cancer, known as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). This is not a type of breast cancer, but instead is a very rare form of lymphoma associated with the immune system and its response to textured implants. Dr Laniewski only uses prostheses that have been deemed safe by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and are recognised to prevent or minimise this complication.
Will I lose nipple sensation after a breast augmentation?
Loss of nipple sensation is a common risk following augmentation mammaplasty breast enhancement surgery. This may only be temporary, with the sensation returning within a few months. It is very rare for all sensation to be lost permanently.
Can a breast augmentation correct breast asymmetry?
Most patients have some asymmetry however, some women have breasts that are dramatically different in size and position, known as breast asymmetry. Dr Laniewski can correct asymmetrical breast using breast augmentation, either by inserting an implant into the smaller breast or by inserting different sized implants into each breast.
Can a breast augmentation correct breast ptosis (sagging)?
Breast augmentation surgery aims to increase breast volume and improve breast shape. While the procedure is not designed to correct extreme ptosis, it can improve some mild breast ptosis. However, if ptosis is severe, you may need to consider your implants with a breast lift to achieve desired results. Dr Laniewski will let you know whether you may benefit from a lift during your initial consultation.
Can a breast augmentation correct tuberous breasts?
Tuberous breasts are a congenital abnormality of the breasts, characterised by narrow breasts, puffy areolas, minimal breast tissue, a high mammary fold, ptosis and asymmetry. This is caused by a constricting ring of tissue at the base of the areola. Tuberous breast correction involves releasing this constricting ring of tissue and inserting breast implants.
