Breast implant revision surgery, also known as breast implant replacement or breast implant revisionary procedure, is a surgical procedure performed to modify or correct previous breast augmentation surgery. This surgery aims to address complications, revise the size or type of breast implants, or change the appearance of the breasts.

Breast implant surgery has come a long way during the past few decades. It’s worth noting, however, that breast implants are not designed to last forever, and at some stage breast augmentation revision may be required. Other reasons for re-doing prior breast plant surgery include:

• Making the breasts bigger or smaller
• Malposition: breast implants that are too high, too low, too close together or too far apart
• Capsular contracture: hardening of scar tissue around the implant
• Deflation or rupture of the implant
• Implants that make the nipples sit too high
• Breast ptosis: breast tissue that droops over the implant
• Switching styles from saline to silicone

It’s important to be completely informed regarding implant options so you can make a decision that best suits your individual needs. The consultation with Dr Laniewski is an educational experience that allows patients to take the next step. Any concerns with previous surgeries can be addressed at this time.

The consultation will include a review of your medical history, along with the establishment of your goals for the upcoming surgery.

Additional considerations

Considerations include your breast’s shape and size, overall skin quality, location of your nipples, and the position of your present implants. A breast lift may be recommended as part of the revision surgery in cases where the breasts have drooped. Major decisions arising from the consultation include:

• The choice of implant: saline, silicone, smooth or textured, round or tear-drop
• Placing the implant using the same scar, or creating a new scar
• The desired size of implant
• Situating the implant either above or below the muscle, or placed in a neosubpectoral pocket

You will be able to feel both saline and silicone implants during the consultation, and choose the type that suits you best. Situating the implants above or below the muscle can be determined by the present state of tissue caused by previous implants, or malposition that requires the forming of a new pocket for your implant.

In the majority of cases, you will be able to return home on the day of your surgery. Within a few days you will be able to drive and return to work, although more invasive surgery will result in a week or two of recuperation before resuming regular activities.
