Liposuction Sydney NSW

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that can assist in removing unwanted fatty deposits. Individual body shape can be determined by a multitude of factors, this may include genetics and metabolism. Individual body shape can also be impacted by individual lifestyle choices. Some individuals can lose weight easily, while others, even if they lead a healthy lifestyle and exercise regularly, may find it difficult to reach their optimal body shape.

Prior to surgery, patients are advised to undergo a general weight loss program through diet and exercise. Patients may be able lose weight in a healthy way. This will then allow patients to better able determine the areas of their body that may potentially best benefit from liposuction. Liposuction can assist in changing body shape and your contours. But it is not an all-in-one cure. The procedure doesn’t remove loose and sagging skin or cellulite. It is for this reason that some patients may choose to undergo other related skin removal procedure at the same time as liposuction.

Suitable candidates

Not every individual is a suitable candidate for undergoing liposuction. Both men and women may be able to benefit from the results of the surgical fat removal procedure. It is important to keep in mind that this is not a weight loss procedure. It is essential that patients are at a healthy and stable weight before considering the procedure. Any changes in weight can alter the results of the surgery.

Even with a strong exercise routine and strict healthy diet, it is possible for some individuals to have localised fatty deposits that can be stubbornly resistant to this. Depending on the individual, liposuction can help in a number of areas that may be more prone to stubborn fatty deposits.

  • Abdomen and waist
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Inner knee
  • Chest
  • Neck, cheeks and chin
  • Ankles and calves

Liposuction is often effective when performed alone, however, it may produce more optimal results when combined with other procedures. This may include a breast reduction, facelift, or body lift.

What does Liposuction surgery involve?

The fat removal surgery methods include the following.

  • Tumescent liposuction: The area that is undergoing the surgery is numbed using an anaesthetic. The liposuction tube (cannula), although acting like a vacuum cleaner, is actually as narrow as a needle, and is designed to help reduce scarring. An anaesthetic is injected into the fatty tissue to help minimise discomfort.
  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction: An ultrasound procedure is first used to liquefy the fat, assisting in the removal through the narrow cannula.
  • Laser-assisted liposuction: This method of liposuction also first liquefies the fat before it is removed.

The type of fat removal procedure Dr Laniewski recommends will depend on several factors unique to each individual.

The lipo procedure generally does not require an overnight hospital stay. The surgery will generally last between one and five hours.

How much does Liposuction Cost?

The costs of liposuction may vary greatly between individuals. There are a number of factors that can impact the costs of this procedure. They could include the extent of the liposuction that is needed. The location of the liposuction and whether or not the liposuction is done in conjunction with other types of procedures can also factor into the costs. The technique that the surgeon uses will also have an impact on the costs.

The best way to determine the costs may be to schedule a consultation with Dr Laniewski. Discuss your realistic goals and any procedures that you’d like to consider including along with the liposuction. There may be a significant cost difference between liposuction on an area of the face and an area of your body.

What about after-surgery care?

Generally, liposuction is not as invasive of a procedure as other surgical procedures are. However, it is still a surgical procedure that may take a toll on your body. Recovering from the procedure will involve rest. Patients may be advised to take at least a week off from work so that their body has adequate time to heal. Patients may find it helpful to have a family member or friend take care of them for the first day or two after their procedure.

The surgeon may place small drains, to assist with the removal of fluids. This will depend on the extent of the liposuction and other procedures that may be done.

Patients will need to wear a compression garment to help control the swelling and to help their body adjust to the procedure.

Patients may also need to take antibiotics to help minimise the potential for infection. There may be some discomfort after the procedure. For some patients, over-the-counter pain relievers may be all that is required after the first two or three days.

While there may be some expected swelling after the procedure, most patients will notice results immediately. As the swelling gradually reduces, the results will be more visible.

Will future weight gain affect my surgery results?

More most patients, this procedure permanently removes fat cells from the targeted area. However, if patients do gain weight after having the liposuction procedure, their body will respond in a typical manner. As the body gains weight, fat cells will enlarge to accommodate the change.

However, the area of the body that has undergone liposuction will now have fewer fat cells and other areas of the body may take up fat instead. With continued weight gain, the area that has undergone this procedure may start to expand in an uneven manner as other fat cells move into the area.

Targeted types of body fat

There are two main types of body fat. The visceral fat is the type of fat that can surround the organs of an individual that may not be entirely healthy. This type of fat can only be addressed by improving health habits.

Individuals who have a large amount of visceral fat may also still have a lot of subcutaneous fat.

Subcutaneous fat is the type of body fat that can make individuals appear larger. The concern that some patients may face is that even with the most stringent of healthy lifestyle choices, there may still be stubborn areas of fat on the body. These stubborn fat pockets may not respond to diet and exercise but can often be removed with liposuction.

Areas that can be treated with Liposuction

One of the major questions patients have when wondering how to get rid of body fat with liposuction, is about the areas that can be treated with the procedure. The best way to find out whether an area you’re concerned about can be treated is to schedule a consultation with your surgeon.

The area’s most commonly treated with liposuction include the following:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs, both inner and outer
  • Chest, both men and women may opt for liposuction on their chest
  • Buttocks and the area beneath the buttocks
  • Knees
  • Back, particularly around the bra area
  • Underarms and upper arms

Liposuction is not the answer for every patient

While liposuction does prove to be effective at removing stubborn fat, it is not the ideal surgical solution for every individual. Liposuction is not to be used as an alternative for weight loss and is not to be considered as a solution for obesity. Those who get the best results from liposuction are those who are at or as close to their ideal weight as possible. They should also be at a steady weight for several months, as a large increase or drop in weight after surgery can impact the results of the procedure.

Things to keep in mind before surgery

Before undergoing liposuction, there are some important things that you should know:

  • It cannot only remove select amounts of fat
  • It cannot remove excess skin.
  • It is not a substitute for weight loss.
  • The procedure cannot correct skin dimpling.
  • You still need to maintain a healthy weight after the procedure.
