Rhinoplasty Recovery: How To Reduce Swelling After Your Nose Surgery by

Swelling will be one of the normal signs of your body’s healing process during rhinoplasty recovery. While it can naturally take some time to subside, there are some steps you can take to minimise swelling and help it subside a little faster.

We’ll outline these key steps in this blog to help you feel prepared for the recovery process ahead. When you have your consultation with Plastic Surgeon Dr Laniewski in Sydney and Central Coast, you will also have the time to discuss what you can expect during your recovery, including how to manage swelling.

What causes swelling during rhinoplasty recovery?

Essentially, swelling is the body’s natural response to surgery. Swelling, along with possible bruising and tenderness in the operated area, can typically always be expected after most surgical procedures.

During rhinoplasty, the skin, cartilage, and bone in the nose are adjusted, which is a form of trauma to the body. To heal, your body will send extra blood flow to the area, supplying cells that fight infection and support tissue repair. While this is all happening, the nose and surrounding areas retain fluid, which is responsible for the swelling.

While a certain amount of swelling is normal, excessive swelling could indicate a complication, such as infection, particularly if it is accompanied by a sensation of heat or discharge from the incision site.

To be able to identify a normal level of swelling and spot the signs of a possible complication, your surgeon can explain what to look out for in more detail.

How long does swelling typically last?

How long swelling lasts during rhinoplasty recovery will vary from person to person, and it can be influenced by several factors.

Generally, swelling will usually reach its peak during the first week after surgery. As well as around the nose, it can also slightly affect the cheeks, and you may also notice bruising.

The swelling can then slowly begin to subside by weeks two to four, allowing you to start to see the results of the rhinoplasty. Typically, most of the swelling will subside three months post surgery, However,it is normal for some swelling to persist for longer.

For swelling to completely disappear after rhinoplasty – as well as many other surgical procedures – it can take anywhere from six months to a year. How fast swelling subsides can depend on the complexity of your surgery, whether you have had to treat any complications after surgery, and whether you are healing individually.

Apart from these factors, there are recovery tips you can follow to help swelling subside at a more timely rate.

How you can reduce swelling during your recovery

We recommend following the tips below to minimise swelling as much as possible during your rhinoplasty recovery. However, remember to always refer to your surgeon’s specific advice for recovering from any surgical procedure.

  • Keep your head elevated.Firstly, one of the simplest yet most effective things you can do is to keep your head elevated as much as possible. This means sleeping on your back with your head propped up on two or three pillows for the first few weeks after surgery. The elevation helps to drain fluids away from the nose, which helps to reduce swelling over time. Some patients even opt for a travel neck pillow, to help them stay comfortable while keeping their head elevated throughout the night.
  • Gently apply cold compresses.Next, applying a soft, cold compress around (but not directly on) the nose can help ease swelling, particularly in the first two days after surgery. It’s important to use something soft, like a cold washcloth, to avoid putting any direct pressure on your nose. You may also be advised to apply a cold compress at intervals, which your surgeon can explain further.
  • Avoid touching or injuring your noseWhile your nose is healing, you will carefully need to avoid touching, bumping or injuring your nose. Irritating or injuring your nose after rhinoplasty can prolong swelling and even possibly lead to further complications. To avoid injury, you should avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, contact sports, and any other activities that could put the area at risk. Sleeping on your back, as we mentioned earlier, will also help to prevent you from accidentally putting any pressure on your nose while you sleep.
  • Quit smoking and avoid alcohol consumption.Quitting smoking and avoiding alcohol are common post-surgery instructions after any procedure. Not only can both smoking and alcohol contribute to swelling, but they can potentially raise the chance of encountering complications. Smoking can slow down healing significantly as it can reduce blood flow, impair blood circulation, and compromise the oxygenation of tissues, which can lead to prolonged swelling and an increased risk of complications.

Alcohol also affects blood flow and can lead to increased swelling, so it’s best to avoid it for at least a couple of weeks after your surgery. Your surgeon may give you a set time frame in which to avoid alcohol.

  • Lower your physical activity levels.Particularly earlier on in your recovery, aim to keep your activity levels relatively low. As you heal, you’ll be able to slowly resume your activity levels, beginning with light exercise. However, you should avoid physically demanding activities and frequently bending over throughout most of your recovery.High activity levels or bending over frequently can cause blood to rush to your face, which can increase swelling. Not only can it prolong swelling, but it can also prolong your overall healing, as your body needs adequate rest to heal.
  • Avoid excessive heat exposure. While your nose heals after rhinoplasty, it’s best to avoid exposure to excessive heat, as this can actually increase swelling. Excessive heat can cause blood vessels to expand, which can increase the swelling around your nose and face.Avoiding excessive heat can include avoiding hot showers, steam rooms, or saunas and prolonged sun exposure in the weeks following surgery. If you go outside, you should protect your face with a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Keep hydrated and follow a healthy diet.Staying hydrated can actually play quite a significant role in reducing swelling. Drinking enough water can help flush excess fluids from your system, which can help swelling subside. Being hydrated also supports your body’s overall healing process after a surgical procedure. While drinking enough water, you may also like to limit caffeine, as it can be dehydrating. The foods you eat can also help. Following a diet filled with vitamins and minerals, such as fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, can support your body’s healing. Limiting salty foods can help prevent water retention, which can contribute to swelling.
  • Follow your surgeon’s instructions. While the above recovery tips are helpful, we will always recommend following the instructions that your surgeon will provide you with before your surgery. Your surgeon’s advice will be tailored specifically for you based on your needs and the complexity of your surgery. Their instructions will include how to care for the wounds (incision sites), how long to keep your head elevated and follow other swelling-reducing steps, and when you can resume exercise – all based on your individual needs.
